About This Site by Rob Fish, WYHS Class of 1971
"I'll Get
By with a Little Help from my Friends" was my class' song. That seems awfully appropriate, because this website wouldn't have
happened without the help, input, ideas and inspiration provided by a
whole bunch of friends - many of whom I've met only online. I know I'll forget some names here, so if you helped with the
web site and I omitted your name, please accept my abject apologies and
my effusive thanks. And then send me an E-mail so I can add you to the page.
To start at the beginning, there's no doubt that Nancy (Keller) Fitton,
Class of '70 and Bob Reed, Class of '71 provided a big part of the inspiration
for this site - their vivid memories of the way things were in Whitehall
when we were growing up brought home the fact that a lot of the experiences
that influenced and molded me as I grew up are gone forever, and if I
want my kids and grandkids to have any inkling of what my life was like
as a kid, I needed to do some recording. And with my advanced C.R.S.,
I better do it soon and get as much help as I can.
And then there was Jimmy Ryan and his knack for guessing the correct
answer to the photo puzzles. As I wandered
around Whitehall, looking for pictures that might stump Jimmy but would
still be recognizable to a large number of Whitehall Alumni from the 60's
through the 90's, I realized that most of us who grew up in Whitehall
during that 40 year period shared a lot of common experiences.
And I need to thank Sharon (Salyer) Kay, Class of '69, for providing
that great account of
the flooded gym and the history of Whitehall - just when I was seriously
considering making the primary function of the site an alumni directory,
Sharon sent a story that reminded me you can find alumni names at classmates.com
and several other commercial sites, but there isn't anyplace on the web
where you can find memories of growing up in Whitehall. Because of Nancy,
Bob, Jimmy and Sharon, and a whole bunch of other folks, wyhs.org is a
place to rekindle those memories.
A tedious and time-consuming part of triggering those memories is collecting
and compiling a lot of information that is hiding in old yearbooks, class
books, old newspapers, old photographs and who knows where else. So
thanks to everyone helping out with searching, compiling, scanning,
editing and writing.
If you'd like to
