WYHS.org August Alumni Newsletter

Hi! Do you realize it is August already? Where has the summer gone? Next
thing you know, it will be time for the WYHS Homecoming, where we're
expecting a record turnout of WYHS Alumni.

August is the month I turn 50 (which makes me younger than some of you and
older than most ). There are graduating classes around the country that
hold "We're turning 50" reunions / parties, but I've never heard of any
being held by WYHS graduating classes. If your class decides to hold one
(or a "We're turning 20" reunion), please let me know so I can put it on
the web site.

The 6 month anniversary of Paula's death is also in August. It is very hard
to believe six months have gone by. Our family is doing well, though we're
still adjusting to life without Paula. Our daughter bought a house two
months ago, and our oldest son signed a contract on a house just last week.
Life goes on.

I've got a bunch of stuff to mention in this "edition" of the wyhs.org
newsletter, so I guess I better to it, huh?

WHITEHALL WEATHER - As I write this, it is 6 AM. It is 64 degrees in
Whitehall and slightly hazy. I know that it may be hard to believe, but the
humidity is 100% (who ever heard of high humidity during a summer in
Whitehall?). Today's high temperature is expected to be 82 degrees, with a
low of 64. The high temperature for the next few days will be in the low
80's. Let's see... it is August, the humidity and temperature are both
high... you guessed it, it is time for the Ohio State Fair. If you've got

ALUMNI SOCCER GAME - The Alumni vs Varsity Soccer game is coming soon -
Saturday, August 16, 2003 at 7 PM in the Stadium behind the high school.
Practices for the Alumni are at 6 PM on Tuesday, August 12 and Thursday,
August 14. There is a raffle this year, with proceeds going to the WYHS
Soccer Team. You'll find more info about the game and the raffle at
http://www.wyhs.org/alumnisoccer (if you're interested in playing, please
contact Lee Jeffers as soon as possible - because of the large turnout last
year, there has been a change of format and you need to "reserve" a spot on
the Alumni Team).

ALL CLASS REUNION - The All Class reunion is just over 13 months away
(September 24th, 2004). We'd like very much to have at least three people
from each graduating class help with the reunion. It doesn't matter where
you live (ain't the Internet a wonderful thing), whether or not you were a
class officer, or if you've ever been to an alumni event. If you're
interested in helping, we'd love to have your help as a "Class Rep." If
you'd like to help with the All Class reunion, you can drop me an EMail,
call Leo Knoblauch at 614-236-9852, or just attend our next planning
meeting, which is Saturday, August 30 at 1 PM at Rooster's Restaurant & Bar

HOMECOMING 2003 - Homecoming is Friday, October 3, 2003. Many alumni groups
participate in Homecoming. If you were in any of the school groups that
performed at a high school football game, your alumni group would love to
have you come back and be a part of Homecoming 2003. In most cases, the
only absolute criteria for participating with an alumni group at Homecoming
is that your body temperature be higher than 92 degrees. While most alumni
attend at least one practice session before Homecoming, there are folks who
show up the night of the game. Whether you're going to be part of
Homecoming or just come watch the game and visit, please plan on coming to
Homecoming 2003. You'll find more info at

CLASS RING FOUND IN TEXAS - A real nice lady sent me an Email recently.
Seems her husband found a WYHS high school ring in Conroe, TX. The ring
belonged to someone who graduated from WYHS in 1975, and it looks like a
ladies ring, size 7, ruby, white gold, with the initials of PN. If you know
who the ring belongs to, let me know and I'll put you in contact with the
lady in Texas.

FREE ONLINE MESSAGE BOARD FOR WYHS ALUMNI - At one time, there was a fair
amount of discussion and reminiscing in an online WYHS message board
sponored by Classmates.com. Folks talked about the drive-in movies, former
teachers, Emil's restaurant, Stewart's Drive-In, football seasons, and all
kinds of stuff. Then Classmates.com changed things so you have to buy an
annual membership in order to post in their message boards, and the message
board just died. I've got a free online message board associated with the
WYHS.org web site. It is a place you can share your memories, thoughts and
impressions about attending WYHS and growing up in Whitehall. Please visit

MULTIPLE GENERATIONS OF GRADS - Julie Gibson (Class of 1979) tells me she is
a second generation graduate of Whitehall - both her parents graduated with
the first class in 1958 - Fredrick N. Brown and Ann Lee (Storck) Brown. Her
children are third generation graduates/student. Julie was wondering if
there are any other families out there anyone knows about that have 3
generations of graduates from WYHS. She, her parents, and her children are
planning to attend the all-class reunion and would very much like to meet
the other families who share this connection. For more info, contact Julie

MEDIA CONTACT LIST - Before I go and reinvent the wheel, if youve' got a
list of Central Ohio media contacts (with addresses and Email addresses),
would you please forward it to me? I'd like to start sending reunion info
to the various tv stations, radio stations, cable companies, newspapers, and
magazines that serve Central Ohio.

Pshew.... what a lot of stuff, eh? As always, class and alumni group
reunion info is listed below. If I've missed anything, please let me know.
I'll be sending out a "reminder" newsletter just before the next Alumni
Association meeting (August 30, 2003). Also, please spread the word about
the http://www.WYHS.ORG - the web site for folks who went to school in
Whitehall. Folks who went to Whitehall City Schools (or worked for the

- ALUMNI BAND MARCHING AT HOMECOMING
If you were in the band, please plan on marching with the Alumni Band
at Homecoming next year - it will be like a warm-up for our performance at
the All Class Reunion in 2004.

The Alumni Ramettes will be performing at Homecoming. Julie (Elk)

- ALUMNI FLAG CORPS
Michele McRay-DeSanto (class of '91) and Missy (Thomas) Harrow (class of
'91) are the new Flag Corps coaches. Michele says they would welcome any
and all alumni to participate in the Flag Corps at Homecoming - even if you
didn't participate in Flag Corps in school ( they'll teach you what you need
to know in plenty of time to participate at Homecoming). You can reach

<< - HALL OF FAME
Start thinking about who you'd like to nominate for the high school's
" Hall of Fame." I'll post info on the site as soon as the high school
distributes the nomination forms. Julie (Brown) Gibson Class of 1979, the
Secretary to the Principal at WYHS, tells me an application deadline has not
yet been set. Nomination forms are usually made available after the
Thanksgiving break and become due on a date just before the Winter break.
Julie mentioned that, as always, the nomination form will include a
section of attributes of the nominee. Usually, the details of which take
some time to get together. She suggested that if anyone knows at this time
who they will want to nominate, compiling that person's information now will
expedite the process when a deadline is set and nomination forms become
available.

I'll provide more info as it becomes available.

information I can add to the site?
