Memories

~ the 80's ~

Beth Tootle, Class of 1982 (September, 2000)

In one of the online message boards, someone asked if we remembered an Urban Legend about a "Midget House" in Pickerington, with caretakers who would chase after you.

No, no, no. It was called the "dwarf house". I could tell you quite a few stories about it, and so could my sister, Connie (class of 83).

The Dwarf House was located off of a long dirt and gravel road, which itself was off of another secondary road, I believe out by Blacklick. It was this big, old abandoned run down house in the middle of nowhere. Some folks say it was off route 204, east of route 256.

As the legend goes - dwarfs lived there and if you drove too close to the house, they would chase you on horses. Now, I never actually SAW a dwarf, but what I'm going to tell you is absolutely true, and you're gonna have to take my word for it.

Many times we would go out there and check it out, only because the stories spooked us enough that our curiosity cried out for the excitement of getting the #### scared out of us. Sometimes, if you went at night, a car would appear out of nowhere and chase you through the back roads WITHOUT THEIR LIGHTS ON! If you left the area, and returned to the main road, they would forfeit the chase.

Looking back, I'm sure it was only some locals trying to keep the legend alive, but back then and to a bunch of teenagers, it was scary as hell! One night, Anne Varney, Crystal Cooper and I went out looking to get scared. I was driving my mom's 1977 Volare' and we broke down in the middle of this "nowhere". The breakdown was a result of an electrical problem, so we had no interior OR headlights. This place was PITCH BLACK. NO STREET LIGHTS, NO LIGHTS FROM SURROUNDING HOMES. Let me tell you - you think Blair Witch was scary!!??? We were shaking in our Nikes, believe me.

The three of us had to hold hands to walk down this road because it was so dark we couldn't see each other. We walked quite a ways and finally saw a house off of the secondary road. The lights were on and we went up and asked to use the phone. We were so afraid of our parents finding out where we were, that we called Mitch Meidl and he and his friends drove out to rescue us.

True story. So - as far as the legend goes...who knows....but that place sure holds some pretty freaky memories for me.
