WYHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION MEETING MINUTES

AUGUST 2003

The meeting was held on August 23, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at Rooster’s Restaurant Located on South Hamilton Road in Whitehall. There were five people in attendance, including three new members.

Clark Fuller had been to Freshman Parent Orientation at WYHS the weekend prior to the meeting. He told the group that Mr. Hunter, the high school principal told the parents that there is a high absentee rate, high dropout rate, and rampant disrepect for teachers, other students, administrators, and parents among the students. Mr. Hunter told the parents that these are some of the major factors contributing to the school system being placed on Academic Emergency by the state of Ohio.

We reiterated the main purposes behind forming the alumni association, which were to raise funds to help the students still in school in Whitehall, be it a Whitehall City School or Holy Spirit, to create role models for students to see that those who have graduated from Whitehall Schools have gone on to achieve their goals and they, too, can achieve their goals, to provide a mentoring program, and to assist the teachers and administrators in helping prepare our children and give them the best education they can get.

We also discussed the All Class Reunion. The Class of 1974 will be holding their 30th year reunion in conjunction with the All Class Reunion. Mary Brobst, the coordinator for the 1974 class reunion, would like to hold their reunion at whatever location the ‘mixer’ for the classes not holding reunions would be held, so there would be a ‘main event’ and a place for the smaller classes to break away into their own reunions. Several places were mentioned that might be able to handle such events, among them the Whitehall Community Park, Berwick Party House, Bella Donna Party House, and possibly Capiozzello’s, although most felt that Capiozzello’s would be too small.

We decided that we would like to have at least one person from each decade to serve as ‘decade representative’, which would be the person organizing any other events aside from the All Class Reunion. We need to decide what exactly the duties of decade representatives will be so we can post them and have people sign up for them.

The next meeting was scheduled for October 4, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at Rooster’s Restaurant in Whitehall, Ohio.
